European elections 2019: to understand everything

Date of the European elections

The European elections are scheduled for Sunday, May 26, 2019. However, in Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and French Polynesia, voters will cast their ballots on Saturday, May 25, 2019.

Conduct of the elections

The poll is open at 8 a.m. and closed at 6 p.m. (local legal time). However, in order to facilitate the exercise of the right to vote, the closing time of the poll may be extended to 8 p.m. (local legal time).

An order issued in Official Journal of May 4, 2019 and another published on May 10, 2019 set the candidate lists for the European elections in France.

Voters Lists: Check online to see if you are registered

You just turned 18? Have you moved recently? You haven't voted in a long time? Have you gone abroad? Want to make sure you are registered to vote in the upcoming European elections on Sunday 26 May 2019? Check your electoral situation using the new online service available on Service-public.fr.

Registration on the electoral lists

To be able to vote, one must be registered to vote. This was possible until March 31, 2019, with the exception of a few specific situations for which it is possible to benefit from a delay.

Address change not reported

If you have moved, you may have been delisted from the lists of your former municipality. However, if this is not the case (to be checked with your home town hall), you can still vote in your home town.

Proxy voting

Holidays, work obligations, training, health problems... Are you away from home on election day? You can still vote by proxy!

Electoral Map

The electoral map shall be presented at the polling station on polling day. However, it is possible to vote by presenting only one piece of identification.

Identification to be presented for voting

In municipalities with a population of 1,000 or more, it is necessary to present an identity document.

French settled abroad

Electors domiciled abroad can vote from their country of residence if they are on a consular list of electors. However, it is possible for those who are registered on a list of electors in France to vote in France, personally or by giving a proxy.

Voting rights of EU citizens in France

A citizen of the European Union who resides in France has the right to vote in the European elections on condition that he is registered on the French electoral roll. In order for his application to be accepted, he must be at least 18 years old on the day of his application for registration.

Voting by people with disabilities

People with disabilities vote either by going directly to the polling station where they can be accompanied to perform certain acts (insert the envelope in the ballot box, sign the sign-in list), or by establishing a power of attorney if they cannot travel.

Voting rights of detainees

Being detained does not deprive you of the right to vote. Only those who have been denied the right to vote and to elect by the courts lose their electoral capacity.
