Running on a bike is a program that offers children aged 6 to 11 years to follow a 10-hour supervised training course allowing them to acquire real autonomy on a bike before entering college.
This program, which is offered throughout the territory during school, after-school or after-school periods, provides families with a system designed to strengthen cycling among children, as well as the safety of cycling on public roads. It should be implemented by 2022.
In 10 hours, it allows children to become independent by bike, to practice daily physical activity and to move in an environmentally and economically friendly way.
It consists of 3 steps:
Know How To Pedal
: mastering the fundamentals of cycling (acquiring a good balance and learning to drive and control your bike correctly: pedaling, turning, braking);
Circulating Skills
: discover mobility by bike in a secure environment (know how to ride in a group, communicate to inform others of a desire to change direction and discover the signs of the highway code);
Know How To Ride A Bicycle
: driving in real situations (learning to drive independently on the public road and to take ownership of the different spaces of practice).
A pedagogical booklet is given to the child at the beginning of his/her training. It allows you to track your progress and skills acquisition. At the end of the last step, the child receives a certificate that validates his participation.
You can find the training closest to you in the section Near you on the website Know how to ride a bike, where more than 1 000 clubs or associations are listed. There you can also find educational tutorials and how-to sheets.
Adopted on January 9, 2018 by the Interdepartmental Road Safety Committee, this program is an interdepartmental initiative. Thus, the Ministries of Sport, National Education and Youth, Transport and the Interior, as well as sports federations through their clubs, associations promoting the use of bicycles, management professionals, prevention associations and communities, jointly intervene in the implementation of this measure and contribute to the organization of learning sessions.
FYI
This program is part of the Plan vélo et mobilités activites presented on September 14, 2018, whose objective is to increase cycling use by 3 times in France and achieve 9% travel on the horizon of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
