The decree of 10 June 2024 on various road safety and traffic regulations tightens the rules applicable to urban rodeos.

It states that “any maneuver on a lane open to public traffic” is punishable by a 3-year tickete class (flat fine of €68) and a loss of 2 points on the driving license. In the event of serious incidents, a license suspension of up to 3 years and the obligation to conduct a road safety awareness course are also possible.

The law of 3 August 2018 strengthening the fight against motorized rodeos provides for fines ranging from €15,000 to €75,000. The penalties are as follows:

  • 1 year imprisonment and €15,000 fines for intentionally repeating maneuvers by means of a motor vehicle which constitute breaches of safety or prudence obligations laid down by the highway code, in conditions which jeopardize the safety of road users or disturb public tranquility;
  • 2 years imprisonment and €30,000 fines where such acts are committed in a meeting;
  • 3 years imprisonment and €45,000 fines where the driver is in one of the three cases:
    • under the influence of alcohol or has refused to submit to the checks provided for in order to establish this;
    • under the influence of narcotic drugs or refused to submit to the checks;
    • does not hold a driving license or that his license has been canceled, invalidated, suspended or withheld.
  • 5 years imprisonment and €75,000 a fine in the case of a combination of at least two of the above circumstances.

The law also criminalizes the incitement, promotion or organization of motorized rodeos, which can be punished by 2 years in prison and €30,000 of fine.

Additional penalties are also provided for:

  • confiscation of vehicles;
  • suspension for up to 3 years or cancelation of the driving license;
  • a penalty of general interest work or of fine-days (the amount of which is the result of the judge fixing a daily sum to be paid to the Treasury for a certain number of days);
  • obligation to complete a road safety awareness course;
  • immobilization of the vehicle (leaving the vehicle in place or close to the place where the offense was established).
