Can you still register to vote in the European elections?

Publié le 07 mai 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

To be able to vote in the European elections, one must be registered on the electoral roll. You had until Friday, May 3, 2024 to complete this process. However, in some special cases, it is still possible to register to vote. Service-Public.fr presents the derogations to you.

If you are in any of the situations described in Article L.30 of the Electoral Code, after 3 May 2024, it is possible to register after the deadline :

  • French youth aged 18 between May 4 and June 8, 2024;
  • you are moving for business reasons (other than transfer). Your family members residing with you on the date of the move also benefit from this time limit;
  • you are a public official (civil servant or contract employee) who has retired or moved because of your work (including transfer). Your family members residing with you on the date of your retirement have the same time to register;
  • you are a military member returning to civilian life;
  • you obtain French nationality;
  • you have the right to vote again.

How do I register to vote after the deadline?

On site, at the town hall of your municipality, or by post (the city hall must receive your mail by the deadline for registration) with the following documents:

  • proof of identity;
  • proof of residence of less than 3 months;
  • form Cerfa n°12669 (also available in town hall);
  • proof of a particular situation (decree to withdraw staff, proof provided by the pension fund, removal for professional reasons, recent proof of acquisition of French nationality...).

FYI

Regardless of your situation, if you are not registered to vote because the administration made a mistake (non-registration despite a request made in time, wrongful cancelation), you can obtain your registration until election day by bringing the matter before the court.
