Exhibitions, film screenings, educational projects for the youngest, but also walks in natural parks or workshops dedicated to food and local products... The European Week for Sustainable Development, which will take place from 18 September to 8 October 2024, offers many activities related to environmental protection.

This year's European Sustainable Development Week September 18 to October 8, is a reminder that all actions matter, including small, everyday actions. His slogan: “Taking action on a daily basis.”

The activities taking place in France, as in other European countries, are intended to raise awareness of the challenges of sustainable development and to encourage everyone to take concrete action. These are initiatives put forward by associations, schools, companies and, more generally, local residents, for example, who want to raise awareness of local environmental characteristics, territorial projects or a regional food heritage.

The individual projects concern at least one of the three dimensions of sustainable development: environment, social or economic.

Government agencies, research institutes, museums, schools, companies, citizens... It is possible to suggest a project for the European Sustainable Development Week until the last day of the event, 8 October. For this, go to the dedicated platform.

The proposed activity must not be exclusively for profit. For example, producers may sell their products, but as part of a broader effort to discover local know-how.

Raising awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals

Initiated by France in 2003, before becoming European in 2015 and then extending over three weeks from 2020, the European Week for Sustainable Development now aims to raise awareness of 17 Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030.

These goals represent a call to action for all countries to promote economic prosperity while protecting the planet. Among the 17 objectives:

  • fighting poverty;
  • ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture;
  • ensuring sustainable management of water resources;
  • Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy services for all.
  • establishing sustainable consumption and production patterns;
  • preserve and restore terrestrial ecosystems.

FYI

the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted on 25 September 2015 by the 193 Member States of the United Nations. It has established 17 sustainable development goals linking poverty reduction and sustainable development. The UN resolution encourages Member States to set their own targets to meet them, taking into account their national specificities.

In September 2019, France adopted an Agenda 2030 “roadmap.” Objective: to identify the key areas in which the business must collectively make progress and mobilize all the players concerned: associations, researchers, the public, local and regional authorities, companies, the State and trade unions.

Reminder

in 2023, the European Week for Sustainable Development counted more than 5,000 projects organized in 24 European countries, including 400 in France.
