Financial help to settle a connected thermostat and reduce your energy costs

Publié le 05 décembre 2023 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

A connected thermostat allows you to adjust the temperature of your home in real time, depending on the weather, the time of day or settings of your choice. You can now receive financial support when you settle such a device at home, whether you are a homeowner or a tenant, and regardless of your income level.

As part of a “thermostat plan”, the government has, among other things:

  • published one information leafletintended for private individuals, to present different information relating to the installation of a temperature control system in a dwelling;
  • and launched the device “Connected control boost of the heating room by room”. This is a financial aid that you can receive if you settle a programmable thermostat connected in your home between 1er December 2023 and December 31, 2024.

A connected programmable thermostat allows you to set the temperature of the different rooms of your home equipped with a heating system (radiator, heating floor...), especially according to time slots. The connected character of the thermostat also allows you to control the device remotely via your phone, and therefore to adjust the temperature of your home while outside. Your energy consumption is thus closer to your real needs.

For example, you can specify that the temperature in different rooms in your home should decrease daily from the time you leave for work; then, you can increase the temperature in some rooms remotely when you are close to home so that you can immediately benefit from a heat level that suits you. You can change a programmed temperature decrease without difficulty if you telework one day in an exceptional way.

The temperature regulation can also be adapted to each part. For example, the bathroom, living room, and bedroom do not need to be heated in the same way and at the same time.

Please note

According to the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe), using a connected programmable thermostat can reduce heating costs by up to 15%.

Reminder

a decree issued in Official Journal 8 june 2023 indicates that from 1er January 2027, all housing units (existing and new) will need to be equipped with an automatic room heating temperature control system. It is therefore not necessarily a connected thermostat, but a device with at least basic temperature programming functions.

What is the amount of the aid?

Help for installing a connected thermostat is for everyone, whether you are a landlord or tenant and regardless of your resource level. It is necessary, however, that the construction of your home has been completed for more than 2 years, and that it is not a district heating system. The aid applies only to installations of a thermostat connected to an individual heating system.

The amount of the aid depends on the total size of the heated area in your home (a figure that you establish by adding up the size of the different rooms in your home where a heating system is located).

How can I benefit from this support?

To be eligible for financial support, the installation must have been done by a professional. This aid is paid by companies who have signed the charter “Coup de pouce piloting connecting heating room by room”. These are mainly energy suppliers or businesses mandated by them. The list of their offers, updated as they become available, is published here (“What offers are available?”). You must:

  • compare the offers of the signatory companies of the charter “Helpful connected heating control room by room”;
  • accept the offer of a signatory to the Charter (or one of its partners);
  • sign a work quotation offered by a professional (the quotation must meet certain technical criteria concerning the performance of the equipment, determined in the context of the “Helping Hand” device; you must check with the professional);
  • have the work carried out by that professional (the invoice must explicitly mention the installation of the temperature control system and its performance level);
  • provide the signatory company of the charter “Coup de pouce piloting connecting of the heating room by room” with certain documents necessary for the payment of the financial support (the invoice, a certificate on the honor of conformity that is given to you by the professional at the end of the work...).

The aid may then:

  • be paid to you by transfer or check;
  • or take another form (vouchers...) agreed with the company signing the charter.

A professional installer may also choose to deduct the aid amount directly from your invoice. He will then ask for that amount to be refunded.

FYI

financial support for the installation of a connected programmable thermostat is awarded under the Energy Savings Certificate (EWC) scheme. It can be combined with MaPrimeRénov and the zero-interest eco-loan; it cannot, however, be combined with the aid granted by Ademe or with the other financial support offered within the system of energy savings certificates.
