Publié le 22 février 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

A decree issued in Official Journal on 13 february 2024, the terms of the eco-bonus for the purchase or rental of a vehicle were amended. Its maximum amount is reduced by €1 000 for the wealthiest households who buy or rent a new private car or van.

The eco-bonus is a financial aid that allows you to buy or rent a low-emission vehicle. For the purchase or hire of a new passenger car, the amount shall be 27 % of the purchase cost of the vehicle. This amount may be increased, if necessary, by the cost of the rented battery. If your reference tax income per unit is more than €15,400, as of February 14, 2024 you cannot receive aid exceeding €4,000 as an ecological bonus for the purchase or rental of a new passenger car; until then, this maximum amount was set at €5,000.

However, the maximum amount of this ecological bonus remains €7,000 for the smallest households. You are now included in these households if your reference tax income per unit is less than or equal to €15,400; previously, this level was set at €14,089.

For the purchase or rental of a new van, the ecological bonus is set at 40% of the purchase cost of the vehicle. As in the case of cars, its amount may be increased, if necessary, by the cost of the battery if it is rented.

If your reference tax income per unit is more than €15,400, you can now receive no more than €5,000 the ecological bonus for buying or renting a new van; previously, the maximum amount was €6,000.

For the smallest households (those for which the reference tax income per unit is less than or equal to € 15 400), the maximum amount of the ecological bonus for the purchase or rental of a van has not changed; it is always €8,000.

Please note

your benchmark tax income is calculated by the tax services based on the income you reported. You can find it on the first page of your last income tax notice.

FYI

the amount of the ecological bonus to which you are entitled is increased by €1,000 if you live abroad, provided you drive there with the new vehicle for at least 6 months following its acquisition.

What steps should be taken to benefit from the ecological bonus?

The procedure for receiving the ecological bonus shall not be amended:

  • either the aid is deducted from the vehicle invoice, or from the first rent in the case of a lease, directly by the concessionaire (he is not obliged to agree to do so);
  • or the assistance is paid to you by the Service and Payment Agency (SPA) after you have requested it yourself on the dedicated online service following the purchase of your vehicle. The request for aid must be made no later than 6 months after the date of invoicing of the vehicle; and in the case of a rental, no later than 6 months after the date of payment of the first rent.

Reminder

the ecological bonus also applies to 2 or 3 motor wheels and motor quadricycles (for these 3 categories, the bonus does not change).

In general, to benefit from the ecological bonus you must be an adult and domiciled in France, and the vehicle in question must in particular:

  • use electricity, hydrogen or a combination of the two as the sole source of energy;
  • have an acquisition cost of less than or equal to € 47 000 including VAT in the case of a private car (no ceiling has been set for vans, two-wheelers, three-wheelers or motor quadricycles);
  • be registered in France.

Please note

the ecological bonus of €1 000 for the purchase or long-term rental of a used car or van is also abolished.
