3677: a new number to report cases of animal abuse

Publié le 25 juin 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

If you witness abuse of a pet, you can call 3677. The National Council for Animal Welfare has set up this number to direct you as quickly as possible to the right person (the police, a veterinarian...) depending on the situation.

Abuse of a domestic animal (or a tamed or captive wild animal) may be reported, for example:

  • the National Police;
  • the gendarmerie;
  • the veterinary services of the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations;
  • to an animal protection association.

In order to be directed to the right person depending on the case of animal abuse you are witnessing, you can call 3677. This national toll-free number, which went live on June 24, 2024, is operational 7 days a week :

  • Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 7 pm;
  • Saturday, from 10:00am to 7:00pm;
  • on Sundays and public holidays, from 10 am to 5 pm.

A teleoperator, who has undergone specific training, asks you about the facts you witnessed; he uses procedure sheets validated by professionals from the police forces and animal protection associations. Based on your answers, it will refer you to the appropriate reporting service.

Please note

If you are already familiar with the procedures for reporting animal abuse, you can continue to contact animal welfare associations, departmental directorates of population protection or law enforcement directly, depending on the situation.

Reminder

Among the acts that can be considered ill-treatment are:

  • depriving an animal of food and water;
  • leave an animal unattended while sick or injured;
  • placing and maintaining an animal in a habitat or environment that may cause suffering, injury or accident;
  • use, unless absolutely necessary, restraining or tethering devices which are unsuitable for the animal in question.
