Publié le 02 septembre 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Free over-the-counter testing, performed at a patient's request, has been reserved for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) until now. As of 1er in september 2024, several sexually transmitted infections were extended free of charge to children under 26.

A decree of 5 July 2024 states that the screening of 4 sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in a medical biology laboratory, without a prescription, becomes free of charge, for insured persons under 26 years of age who request it.

The infections involved are:

  • Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis);
  • gonococcus (Neisseria gonorrhoeae);
  • syphilis (Treponema pallidum);
  • hepatitis B virus.

This measure shall apply from 1er September 2024.

Reminder

Non-prescription HIV testing in a medical laboratory remains free of charge for all insured persons and their dependants, as well as beneficiaries of State medical aid, without advance payment.

FYI

When patients are admitted to the laboratory, they are given a questionnaire. This document allows the medical biologist to direct the patient to the most relevant screenings and the most appropriate self-collection methods, “with regard to his sexual practices and in accordance with the scientific recommendations in force”.
