Infant bronchiolitis: how to prevent it this winter?

Every winter, bronchiolitis affects about 30% of newborns and infants. To prepare properly, the Ministry of Labor, Health and Solidarity is strengthening its awareness campaign. What are the right actions and treatments available? Service-Public.fr answers you.

This campaign is aimed mainly at parents but also at everyone good gestures to be adopted to limit the contamination but also to be attentive and act if first symptoms appear.

Since late 2023, a vaccine for pregnant women and preventive treatments for infants have been available:

  • an injection of the Abrysvo vaccine may be given during pregnancy, in the period between 7e and 8e month. The vaccine enables the mother to develop antibodies transmitted directly to the infant, who will be immunized from birth to the first 6 months of life;
  • 2 preventive treatments can be given to infants: Synagis, for premature or high-risk newborns with heart or lung defects; Beyfortus, for newborns and infants under 1 year of age.

These products are available in pharmacies and maternity wards (except Synagis, available only in maternity wards).

They are 100 % covered by the Health Insurance, subject to some specific features.

Eighty percent of parents have been on treatment since it was started, and about 5,800 hospitalizations for bronchiolitis have been avoided.
