Rail travel: the new rules on baggage limitation

Publié le 11 octobre 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

As of September 15, 2024, travelers on the Inoui and Intercité high-speed trains must comply with the SNCF's new rules concerning their luggage on board trains. As the holidays of All Saints approach, Service-Public.fr informs you.

The new rules imposed by the SNCF came into force in February 2024, with an adjustment period allowing for tolerance. The carrier has announced that it will end this period.

The rules allow for a maximum of:

  • 2 pieces of luggage up to 70 x 90 x 50 cm (suitcase, hiking bag, sports bag, etc.);
  • 1 hand luggage with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 15 cm (backpack, bag, handbag, computer bag, etc.).

All baggage must be tagged.

The carrier's general instructions are: " You just need to be able to carry all your luggage yourself at once. ”

Travelers who do not comply with the new baggage policy are subject to a fine of €50 per piece of luggage non-compliant or surplus (150 euros for luggage that interferes with the circulation in the corridors).

In case of special luggage

You can take away per person:

  • 1 luggage type suitcase or travel bag (maximum dimensions 70 x 90 x 50 cm);
  • 1 hand baggage (maximum dimensions 40 x 30 x 15 cm);
  • 1 special luggage (maximum dimensions of 90 x 130 x 50 cm): stroller, folded scooter, foldable wheelchair, water board, musical instrument...

Reminder

Carry-on baggage or space-saving bags should be placed at your feet, under or above your seat; other baggage should be left at the entrance, in the center of your car or in the empty spaces (on the ground) between some seats arranged back to back.

The SNCF offers a luggage delivery service (My Luggage) that picks up your luggage at your home or at one of its pick-up points and delivers it where and when you want it.
