Publié le 22 octobre 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

At supermarkets or in your local shops, you will find products bearing the Label Rouge label. What does this label mean and what guarantees does it provide? While the Label Rouge is almost 60 years old, Service-Public.fr informs you.

The Label Rouge is a national sign that designates products that, by their production or manufacturing conditions, have a uppermost quality level in relation to other similar commercial products. This high quality level shall be assessed taking into account:

  • of production conditionswhich differ from the conditions under which similar products are produced on the market;
  • the image of the product with regard to its production conditions;
  • presentation or service elements.

The Label Rouge logo can cover both food (poultry, cheese, fruit, bread...) and non-food and unprocessed agricultural products (rose plant, cut Christmas tree...).

Easily identifiable by its color, it shall appear directly on the product in the form of a label or on the top of its packaging and shall contain:

  • 2 endorsements: ‘Label Rouge’ and ‘Superior quality guarantee’;
  • the approval number enabling the consumer to find the product specification to which the product corresponds.

Red Label and Quality Control

À all stages of its production and manufacture, the Label Rouge product must meet the requirements of a specification validated by the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO) and homologue by an interministerial judgment. Compliance with these requirements and product çtraceability shall be monitored by an independent certifying body.

The maintenance over time of the superior taste quality is also regularly monitored in order to compare the labeled product with a common commercial product.

You can find all products with a Label Rouge on INAO.

Please note

The Red Label can be found on products produced in the European Union as well as outside the European Union, it is not reserved exclusively for products manufactured in France.

FYI

The Red Label is the first food label to be established. Its approval framework was laid down by a decree of 13 January 1965, following the 1960 Agricultural Guidance Act, which marks the creation of agricultural labels. Chicken from the Landes is the first product to be labeled. The Label Rouge logo was introduced in 1983.
