World AIDS Day, December 1, 2024

Publié le 25 novembre 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Every year on the 1ster December is World AIDS Day. The theme of this 2024 edition is “Let's follow the path of rights”. This day is an opportunity to demonstrate support for people living with HIV and to remember the victims of AIDS-related illnesses.

World AIDS Day was launched in 1988 and was the first international day dedicated to global health. It aims to raise awareness of the impact of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) on people's lives, the eradication of discrimination, the elimination of stigmatization but also to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV.

This year’s theme, “ Let us follow the path of rights proposes a human rights-based approach to AIDS.

Two brochures from Santé Publique France are available for information on the occasion of this event.

“Are you sure you know everything about HIV and AIDS?  : all the information you need to know about transmission of the virus, means of protection, treatment but also about other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You will also find a list of organizations where you can get information: information centers, PMIs, associations...

Teen questions (love-sexuality) : This booklet answers the most common questions of adolescents on the themes of love, body, sexual practices and sexual risks (STI, HIV/AIDS, unplanned pregnancy).

It should be noted that, from middle school onwards, the Life and Earth Sciences (LTS) courses provide information on the modes of transmission and means of HIV prevention. Health promotion and prevention can also be addressed in the school curriculum of different courses.

FYI

New recommendations were announced by health authorities on 20 November 2024 to expanding preventive treatment for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), while the circulation of HIV is still active in France. PrEP is a preventive treatment advised before and after unprotected sex to rule out infection. Today, it is prescribed exclusively to men who have sex with men who have multiple partners.

The High Authority for Health (HAS), the National Agency for Research on AIDS-Emerging Infectious Diseases (ANRS-MIE) and the National AIDS Council (CNS) recommend that it be extended "to all situations considered to be at risk of exposure to HIV, regardless of the gender and sexual orientation of persons".
