Driving license: you can now retrieve your harmonized prefectural registration number

Publié le 17 décembre 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

To register for the highway code exam, you need your harmonized prefectural registration number (NEPH). Since December 2, a new Interior Ministry online service allows you to find this number if you have misplaced it. Service-Public.fr explains how to do this.

A new online service has been available since December 2 to request your harmonized prefectural registration number (NEPH).

The NEPH is awarded by the prefecture to each candidate on initial registration in the competitions. It is used to monitor the driver’s driving license file throughout the life of the driver: driver's license file number (different from the title number itself).

If you're a traffic code candidate, you need this number. It will appear on your Driving License Enrollment Certificate (PID).

Why ask for the recovery of your NEPH?

You must apply for a NEPH:

  • if you lost your certificate between the time you registered on the ANTS website and the code was passed;
  • if you want to change your driving school and have not been able to get your NEPH back.

You must request a reactivation of your NEPH:

  • if you have timed out more than 5 years between your registration on the ANTS website and the code : the number you have may be too old and no longer allow you to take the exams.

The online service allows, after validation by the competent service, to generate a new certificate of registration for the driving license including your NEPH. The online process takes about 10 minutes. Your driving school can also do it for you.

Go to the on-line approach to request lost NEPH or reactivation of NEPH.

Reminder

To obtain the Driver's License Enrollment Certificate (DPIA) in a given category, you must write for examination on the website of the National Agency for Secure Titles (NSA).

The application for a driving license for the desired category (car, motorcycle, heavy goods vehicle) must be made before the theoretical tests are taken. The same applies to persons who have had their driving rights invalidated or canceled.

Please note

The NEPH is visible on the driver's license, on the AIPC and on the digital booklet. If you no longer have any of these documents, you can use this online service.
