January 2025 natural gas sales benchmark price up 4.38%

Publié le 02 janvier 2025 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Since regulated gas tariffs ended on June 30, 2023, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has published a monthly benchmark natural gas sales price for residential consumers. The average benchmark gas sales price is increasing in January 2025 compared to December 2024.

The average benchmark selling price for natural gas, calculated by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), is in January 2025:

  • €145.04/MWh (megawatt hour) inclusive of all taxes (including VAT), compared to 138,95 €/MWh including VAT in December 2024 (i.e one increase of about 4.38%);
  • €102.78/MWh excluding taxes (excluding VAT), compared to €98.50/MWh excluding VAT in December 2024.

The Energy Regulatory Commission calculates an annual average price per MWh consumed, based on data provided by GRDF. The CRE benchmark price includes a subscription price and a kilowatt-hour price, which are applied to consumers of the cooking/hot water and heating type.

In January 2025 according to the grid established by CRE the average price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for heating is €0.11845 including VAT, compared to €0.11237 including VAT in December 2024 (an increase of around 5.41% between December 2024 and January 2025). For cooking and hot water, the average price per kWh is €0.14743 including VAT in January 2025, compared to €0.14135 including VAT in December 2024 (an increase of around 4.3% between December 2024 and January 2025).

If the price per kilowatt hour increases, the price of the natural gas subscription indicated in the CRE grid has remained stable since July 2024: it is €114.30 per year including VAT in cooking/hot water and €277.43 per year including VAT in heating.

Reminder

Consumers who have not left regulated gas sales tariffs on 1er July 2023 were transferred after that date to a default offer at the historical supplier (so-called flip-flop offer).

The National Energy Ombudsman proposes a bid comparator independent.

What is the benchmark price?

The CRE's monthly benchmark selling price for natural gas informs consumers in the context of the end of the regulated gas sales tariff (RGTR).

It is variable and indicative and represents an average estimate of the costs incurred by suppliers for the supply of natural gas to a residential customer.

For consumers, it serves as a compass for comparing offers, giving consumers an idea of the price at which regulated tariffs would have been if they had been maintained. The CRE states that suppliers are now free to construct their offers according to supply conditions (cost of energy on the wholesale market) and other costs (routing, storage, remuneration of the supplier).

FYI

The CRE recalls that the supplier has a duty to provide information and advice in his contractual relationship with the customer; he must offer the offer best suited to the consumer's needs.
