What to know about the new Nutri-Score

Publié le 20 mars 2025 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

The Nutri-Score, the nutrition labeling on many food packages, is changing. A decree of March 14, 2025 specifies the new contours of the tool. Objectives: to adapt it to changes in the food supply and to harmonize it with the standards of the other countries involved.

The Nutri-Score aims, on the one hand, to make it easier for consumers to understand the nutritional information of the products they buy and to help them make informed choices; on the other hand, to encourage professionals to improve the composition of their products.

It shall be affixed to the front of packages by producers, on a voluntary basis.

Nutrition labeling is among the “most effective public policies against overweight and obesity,” according to a 2024 Department of Health statistical study. The order of 14 March 2025 follows recommendations from a scientific committee of nutrition experts to adapt the tool to scientific advances and to the requests of the various countries adhering to the scheme.

What are the changes about?

The Nutri-Score scale consists of 5 letters from A to E, combined with 5 colors (from dark green to red), each representing the composition and nutritional qualities of the product. The letter E (red) is the lowest grade.

The method of calculating the score has been adapted to take account of the specific characteristics of certain food families, such as added fats (butter, oil), starches, dairy products and beverages:

  • Oils with a lower saturated fatty acid content (e.g. olive, rapeseed or walnut oil) are marked B instead of C.
  • Some oily fish rich in omega 3 (sardines, mackerel...) are better rated.
  • It is easier to differentiate complete starch (bread, rice) from refined starch.
  • The sweet and savory products are noted more severely.
  • Water is the only drink rated A; drinks with low sugar content are rated higher.
  • Drinks with sweetener are assigned to categories C to E (instead of B).
  • Milk, flavored and sweetened milk, drinking yogurt and vegetable drinks (almond, soy, rice...) are calculated with the drinks algorithm to facilitate the comparison.

Please note

As of 14 March 2025, the economic players involved in the scheme have 2 years to update their packaging by adopting the new Nutri-Score. The logo with a box “ New calculation” allows you to indicate the products that have the new Nutri-Score.
