ID card: a new reason to renew it for free

As of March 31, 2025, you can renew your national identity card (CNI) for free. This experimental device aims to speed up the adoption of digital identities in France, by facilitating access to the electronic identity card in bank card format (CNIe).

Early renewal is subject to several conditions

To request an early renewal of your ID card, you must:

  • be of age;
  • not already have an NICe;
  • to carry out a online pre-application via the website of the National Agency for Secure Securities (NSA);
  • and return the old ID card when the new one is issued.

How is the online process done?

The request will not take more than 10 minutes, you must:

  • you sign in or create an account on the site of the ANT;
  • state the reason for the pre-application ‘Digital identity renewal’;
  • complete your civil status and nationality (mandatory fields);
  • complete your address and contact information;
  • validate the pre-application;
  • keep the pre-request number and/or the QR Code. It is recommended to print the pre-request summary, it will be necessary during your visit to the town hall.

The renewal of the identity card is paid only in case of non-presentation of the old national identity card. If your identity card is lost or stolen, you will have to pay a tax stamp at a rate of €25.

What documents are to be provided?

After completing the online process, you should make an appointment in town hall with the necessary supporting documents:

  • the pre-application number and/or the QR Code obtained at the end of your procedure;
  • a recent photo ID of less than 6 months;
  • proof of residence of less than 6 months;
  • your old ID card.

What is the purpose of digital identity?

The application France Identity creates a new secure digital identity, combining CNIe and your smartphone. This application offers practical solutions:

  • you have one-time proof of identity;
  • you can access more than 1,400 online services through FranceConnect ;
  • and finally you can prove your identity.

Some approaches cannot be dematerialized because of their sensitivity. The certification of the digital identity France Identité allows to provide a level of guarantee that meets the strong security requirements of new online services. With your new credit card format card, you can certify your identity by going to a town hall which allows it (the list is scalable).
