Can you still qualify for social security?
Verified 25 July 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
The question of whether you can be attached to a social insured for the coverage of your health costs by the Social Security depends on your age. Indeed, the answer varies depending on whether you are an adult or a minor:
You're an adult
No, you can no longer be entitled since the implementation of the universal health protection (Puma).
Indeed, any person who is of age without a professional activity is entitled to be paid for his health expenses if he lives in France by stable and regular.
There is therefore no longer any need to be attached to a qualifying insured.
Thus, the concept of entitled person has disappeared for persons aged 18 and over from the general social security system.
You're a minor
Yes, you can be entitled a social insurance policy with one of your parents or 2.
Indeed, only minors continue to have the status of rights holder.
This status of entitled party ends the year you turn 18.
Please note
From 16 years, you can apply to be insured in your personal capacity. In this case, your medical expenses will be reimbursed to your own bank account.
You can inquire at the Primary Health Insurance Fund.
FYI
Your parents can also ask that you be attached to them if they depend on the MSAMSA : Agricultural social mutual society.
Please note
Any person who deliberately refuses to become affiliated or who persists in not committing the procedure for compulsory membership of a social security scheme shall be punishable by six months' imprisonment and a fine of €15,000, or only one of those two penalties.
