Sell or give away your vehicle
Verified 04 September 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
When you sell or give your vehicle, you must to hand over certain documents to new owner. You must also notify administration using the online service of theANTS: titleContent. It is no longer possible to deposit or send your declaration of assignment to the prefecture. Here are the steps to follow.
Step-by-step approach
The certificate of registration (formerly called carte grise) must be on behalf of the person who sells the vehicle.
If you have moved since obtaining the certificate of registration, you must have changed your address before the sale (or donation). The Certificate of Registration must indicate your address at the time of sale (or donation).
Only the owner of vehicle can sell the vehicle. If there is more than one co-holder, the signature of all persons mentioned on the certificate of registration is mandatory.
Warning
If the vehicle is rented with an option to purchase (LOA), also called car leasingNo, you can't sell it. Only the lender, the owner of the vehicle, can do it.
If you sell or give an individual a private car (VP), a van , a motorhome of 3,5 tons maximum over 4 years of age or a motor vehicle with 2 or 3 wheels or a motor quadricycle of more than 5 years, you must to give to the buyer one minutes of technical inspection.
The check must be carried out in a approved centre.
If the passenger car (VP), the van, the motorhome of 3.5 tons maximum is more than 4 years old: the check must be less than 6 months old on the date of filing the application to establish the new registration certificate (when counter-visit has been prescribed, the period of 2 months allowed to carry it out must not be exceeded).
If a 2- or 3-wheel motor vehicle or motor quadricycle is more than 5 years old: the check must be less than 6 months old on the date of submission of the application for the new registration certificate (when counter-visit has been prescribed, the period of 2 months allowed to carry it out must not be exceeded).
If the deadline is exceeded, a new check will have to be carried out, at your expense.
Please note
A VP, van, motorhome of up to 3.5 tons under 4 years of age or a 2 or 3-wheel motor vehicle or motor quadricycle under 5 years of age may be sold without technical inspection to an individual.
A vehicle may be sold without a roadworthiness test to a automotive professional.
Some vehicles are also exempt from roadworthiness tests.
If the result of the roadworthiness test is favorable, the inspection center shall immediately issue the inspection report to you. You have to give it to the buyer.
Alternatively, a counter-visit may be imposed within a maximum of 2 months after the initial visit. Only the defects which justified the counter-visit will be checked again. It's a matter of checking that the prescribed repairs have been done. You then have 2 possibilities:
- Either you have your car repaired at your own expense, then you have to pass the counter-visit, so that you can give the buyer the initial test report together with the counter-visit report
- Either you sell your car as is, which means it has to be sold less than 2 months after the initial visit. It will be the buyer who will take care of the counter-visit. But, if you go beyond the 2-month deadline, you will have to do a complete check again.
Warning
In the event of one or more critical failures, you must make the counter-visit and repair(s) before selling your vehicle to an individual. A non-rolling vehicle may not be offered for sale to an individual. You can only sell the non-rolling vehicle to a professional with a number Siret.
You must obligatory provide the buyer with a certificate of administrative status. It must be from less than 15 days.
This certificate is obtained immediately on the internet on the website of the National Agency for Secure Titles (NSA) at the time of your transfer declaration.
Formerly called non-pledge certificateHowever, this document proves that you did not pledge your car for a loan.
It also proves that you paid all your tickets.
If you don't get it, it's because the public treasury (the center of your taxes) has opposed the transfer of your registration certificate.
