My child has a disability
Verified 03 October 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Several measures are being put in place to help children with disabilities in their daily lives. To be eligible, the disability must have been diagnosed by a health care practitioner (for example, a primary care practitioner, a child psychiatrist). Once this diagnosis is made, contact the MDPH: titleContent. The MDPH is responsible for helping persons with disabilities assess their needs and support them in their efforts. Here's the information you need to know.
If you are private-sector employee, you can benefit from a leave for the announcement of your child's disability.
If you are public-sector employee (official or contract), you can benefit from a parental leave. This leave allows you to reduce or stop your professional activity to take care of your child who needs your presence and care.
As the parent of a child with a disability, you can collect Education allowance for disabled children (AEEH) to help pay for expenses related to your child's disability. This aid may be supplemented by one of the following:
- AEEH Add-In or disability compensation benefit (DCH) top-up if your child has a certain level of disability
- Daily parental attendance allowance (DPA) if the severity of your child's disability forces you to reduce or suspend your professional activity.
You can subscribe to survivor's annuity contract to ensure future income is paid to your child with a disability.
FYI
Your child benefits from a fiscal connection to your household or to separate taxation according to its age.
Specialized structures exist if your child is unable to integrate a nursery or a child care center in ordinary (i.e., traditional) settings.
It's the CDAPH: titleContent who decides on your child's educational orientation in an ordinary or adapted environment. This decision is based on your child's needs and abilities.
Your child's needs are recorded in his or her personalized schooling project (PPS). This document determines the conditions of his schooling up to higher education.
