Modification of the home insurance contract
Verified 09 March 2022 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
The home insurance contract may be amended in the event of a change in circumstances or at the request of the insurer. You are concerned regardless of your nationality and regardless of the length of your stay in France.
Following a change of situation (moving, marriage, ...)
If you have home insurance, you must notify your insurer of any change in circumstances that affects the insured risk.
These are the changes that may result in a decrease or increase in insured risk.
The most common changes are those that involve the following:
- Your home
- Your family situation (marriage, divorce...),
- Your professional situation (start of a new activity, retirement ...)
The approach varies depending on whether the change in situation results in a reduction or an increase in the insured risk.

You can also ask for a reduction in the amount of your contribution.
If the insurer refuses, you can terminate the contract. Termination takes effect 1 month after the request.
Increased risk
If the change results in an increased risk, you must report it within 15 days calendar days from the day you become aware of it.
You must report the change of situation by registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt or by electronic registered mail.
You can use from the following letter template:
Report a risk change to its insurer
The insurer may refuse to insure this new risk and terminate the contract or offer you an increase in the contribution.
If you agree, you will receive a agreeable or a new contract.
If you refuse or do not respond within 30 calendar days, the contract may be terminated.
If the change in situation has a significant impact on the hedged risk, you can request the termination of your contract. For example, if you move.
However, you can also choose to transfer your contract to your new home during this change of residence. Make sure that the characteristics of this new home are taken into account in your contract (type of home, value of insured goods, for example).
At the request of the insurer
The insurer may also propose a modification of the contract. For example, they can offer you to remove or add a warranty.
He or she must obtain your consent for this change to become effective, unless it is required by law (for example, the insured must have a smoke detector in the insured home).
If you refuse, the insurer must maintain the original warranty terms.
Any modification of the insurance contract shall be subject to agreeable signed by the two parties.
