Can an educated disabled child have care and support at school?
Verified 15 March 2024 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Yes, your child may receive support during or outside school if he/she needs care and/or academic support. This support may be offered by the following devices:
- Accompanying students with disabilities (AESH)
- Special Education and Home Care Service (Sessad)
AESH is a person who works particularly in your child's classroom in consultation with the teacher. It helps your child to participate in the collective life of the school (for example, help with note-taking, help to promote exchanges with other students, help with the handling of materials, ...). It depends on your child's school.
However, the Sessad is composed of a multidisciplinary team (child psychiatrist, psychomotrician, speech therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, etc.). The Sessad will take care of the overall development of your child's abilities. The Sessad does not depend on your child's school.
These devices may be to accumulate between them.
Your child can benefit from it if he is at school, at college or at secondary school.
To be able to receive support for your child, you must make a request to the MDPH: titleContent.
The request can be made online through an online service, if the MDPH: titleContent of your place of residence offers it:
Application for MDPH benefits (AAH, PCH ...) and renewal
You can also apply by post through a form:
Application or renewal of disability benefits (AAH, PCH, CMI, accommodation ...)
You must contact supporting documents mentioned in connection with your online application or on the form.
Documents must be sent (or scanned if you apply online) to the MDPH: titleContent of your place of residence.
It's the CDAPH: titleContent who decides, according to your child's needs, to which type of support it must be oriented.
The CDAPH response generally occurs in a four-month period from the date of filing your application with the MDPH.
If no reply is received after 4 months, the request shall be considered as rejected.
Missions of AESH as those of Sessad are specified in its personalized schooling project (PPS).
