Crit'Air sticker or pellet (air quality certificate)
Verified 02 January 2025 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Additional cases ?
Should all vehicles have a Crit'Air sticker? We tell you the rules to know on the Crit'Air sticker (air quality certificate).
The Crit'Air vignette specifies the pollution level of the vehicle.
There's 6 thumbnails : the higher the number of the sticker, the more polluted the vehicle.
All vehicles must have a Crit'Air sticker: car, utility, motorcycle, scooter, heavy goods vehicle...
The Crit'Air sticker must be bonding in a manner that visible on the vehicle.
During a pollution episode, the thumbnail is obligatory to circulate in the event of implementation of the differentiated (alternating) circulation .
FYI
The road signs indicate any reductions in maximum permitted speeds or traffic deviations.
The thumbnail is obligatory to circulate in a low-emission mobility zone (m-EPZ).
However, access to an m-EPZ may not not be prohibited to vehicles displaying a mobility card inclusion with the mention parking for disabled people.
The applications ZFE.green and Smart Bison allow you to know the m-EPZs and their movement restrictions :
ZFE.green: list of ZFEs and route simulation
Example :
In the Metropolis of Greater Paris m-EPZ, light vehicles (PTACPTAC : Total permissible laden weight ⩽ 3.5 tons) not classified or bearing the sticker Crit'Air 5, Crit'Air 4 or Crit'Air 3 may not circulate from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except public holidays.
This movement restriction applies to heavy goods vehicles 7 days a week, from 8 am to 8 pm.
However, exceptions may apply. Thus, in 2025, a Crit'Air 3 vehicle is eligible for a ZFE pass allowing to travel for 24 days in the ZFE, in addition to weekends.
The Crit'Air sticker is based on the following criteria:
- Type of vehicle : car, lightweight utility, motorcycle, scooter, heavy goods vehicle...
- Type of energy or fuel : electric, diesel, petrol...
- Euro Standard of the vehicle or date of 1re registration.
Use the simulator to find out which Crit'Air sticker to buy for your vehicle:

You need to paste the thumbnail front of the vehicle so that it is visible from the outside.
- For a 2 or 3 wheels: on the fork
- For a car, utility, heavy goods vehicle...: inside the vehicle, front visible from the outside, on the lower right part of the windshield.
One video describes how to affix the Crit'Air (air quality certificate) sticker:
Vidéo - How to affix the Crit'Air sticker (air quality certificate)?
Operating instructions for a vehicle with windshield
Clean the inside of the windshield at the bottom right.
The surface must be clean and dry before application.
Peel off the whole from the back of the document and paste it onto the cleaned area.
The Crit'Air sticker must be visible from the outside.
Once glued, do not attempt to reposition the assembly as this will tear the thumbnail.
Operating instructions for a vehicle without a windshield
Remove the patch that is on the front of the mail
Take off the certificate gently. Be careful, the surface is sticky.
Return the certificate and reposition it in the same place.
Take off the whole from the back of the document.
The Crit'Air sticker must be affixed, visible from the outside, to a surface located at the front of the vehicle in a highly visible manner: fork, mudguard, right front fairing.
No, a vehicle keeps the same Crit'Air vignette throughout his life.
Once purchased, the sticker remains valid as long as she stays legible.
Move in a low-emission mobility zone (m-EPZ) with an unauthorized vehicle or without a Crit'Air sticker is sanctioned by a fine up to €450.
In general, it is a flat-rate fine of €68.
The same fine is provided if you do not respect the traffic restrictions in case of alternating traffic during a pollution episode.
The following vehicles are concerned:
- Passenger car
- 2 or 3 wheels, motor quadricycles
- Lightweight Utility.
This offense may result in immobilization of the vehicle and its impoundment.
