Can you collect the RSA when you live abroad?

Verified 06 March 2025 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

Yes, it is possible to collect the RSARSA : Income from active solidarity if you are abroad, but under conditions.

It all depends on whether you are leaving France for a period of time less than or greater than 3 months.

Duration less than 3 months

You continue to receive the RSA during the months of absence outside France.

On your return from the foreigner, you must reside in a stable and effective manner in France.

Example :

If you leave France on the 1ster March to April 25 (less than 3 months), you continue to receive the RSA during this period.

You must verify your quarterly pre-filled resource return, validate it and, if necessary, complete it with your other resources collected over the period (child support for example).

Duration greater than 3 months

You can no longer collect the RSA during your stay abroad.

You must inform your CafCaf : Family Allowance Fund (or the MSAMSA : Agricultural social mutual society if you are dependent on the farm plan) from your change in situation.

The allowance is paid only for full calendar months (of 1er the last day of the month) of presence in France.

Example :

If you leave France from April 25 to October 25, you will not receive the RSA for the months of April to October, but only from the 1ster January to March 31 and from March 1er November to December 31.

You must verify your quarterly pre-filled resource return, validate it and, if necessary, complete it with your other resources collected over the period (child support for example).

If you do not know your date of return to France, you can ask your CAF or the MSA for a suspension of your right to the RSA.

Warning

To avoid having to repay an overpayment, report your change of situation to your CAF or the MSA.
