Do you need a city planning permit to build attic?

The city planning authorization is different if the attic of construction already constitute floor area or if work is required to create or add floor area.

Awnings with already existing floor area

The attic of the construction have the following characteristics:

  • Ceiling height of more than1.80 m
  • Floor (or slab) resistant to the load of a human activity (housing, professional, craft, industrial, commercial)
  • A framework that does not clutter up the space

In this case, there is no authorization to apply for, because the floor area already exists.

However, if the dwelling is within the protective perimeter of a backup and enhancement plan, a Advance Work Statement (AD) must be tabled. To find out if the accommodation is located in this type of perimeter, you must contact the Departmental Unit of Architecture and Heritage (UDAP):

Awnings with floor area to be created

The attic of the construction have the following characteristics:

  • Floor (or slab) that does not resist the load of a human activity (housing, professional, craft, industrial, commercial)
  • The framework that clutters the space

The existing area is considered non-upgradeable and does not constitute floor area.

If these criteria are changed to fit the attic, a floor area is created when the ceiling height exceeds 1.80 mr.

In this case, a Advance Work Statement (AD) must be deposited in town hall.

The means of compiling the RFP file differs depending on whether the project is located in Paris or in another municipality.
