Renewal of the passport of an adult - In Portugal or Canada

You can apply to renew your passport without moving at the embassy or consulate if you meet all of the following conditions :
- You still have your passport (it has not been lost or stolen)
- You were at least 18 years old on the date of issuance of your current passport
- Your passport is still valid or has expired for less than 5 years
- You are not applying for a passport renewal to change your birth name or first name or gender
- You do not apply for a 2nd passport (for business reasons or incompatible destinations)
- You are registered to Register of French outside France and have your consular registration number (Numic) and your registered email address
- You have a La Poste digital identity
Here are the steps the passport renewal process:
Step 1 - Know if you need to buy an electronic stamp
In most cases, especially if your passport has expired or is expiring soon, you will need to provide a "Français de l'foreigner" electronic stamp by an amount of €96. You have to buy this stamp on the internet:

In this case, your passport will be valid 10 years from the time of its issue.
Warning
You don't buy an electronic stamp if you are in one of the following situations and agree that the new passport will keep the same expiry date as the old one:
- There are only one or two empty pages left on your current passport
- You change your last name (for example, spouse)
- You changed your address
- You renew your passport to correct an error made by the administration
Step 2 - Prepare the documents and information needed to make the online pre-request
In any case
You must provide:
- Your Consular Registration Number (Numic) in the French Register established outside France
- The e-mail address communicated to the Register of French outside France
- One french-standard photo and less than 6 months old
- A copy of your current passport (double page where your identity photo and signature are)
- Proof of domicile less than one month ago
Other information or documents are needed depending on your situation:
- If you need to buy an electronic stamp, the number of your stamp
- If you renew your passport to correct an administrative error and you renew your passport free of charge, an affidavit in which you present the administrative error (an attestation model is available)
- If you renew your passport because its pages are exhausted and you renew your passport free of charge, copy all the pages of the passport into a single file, with the page numbers clearly visible (optional, you can send it later by mail)
- If one or more valid visas require you to keep your current passport, a copy of one of those visas
- If you change your last name, proof of change of last name
Step 3 - Pre-apply for a passport renewal on the Internet
You must use FranceConnect+ via your La Poste digital identity.

If you cannot connect with FranceConnect+, you must go to the consulate to renew your passport on site.
Step 4 - Receive the consulate's response to your pre-request
You're getting an answer by email at the address you declared when you registered with the French Register abroad.
The email presents the list of documents which you must mail to the consulate, the postal address the consulate, as well as the information you will need to have a remote video-conference interview with a consular officer.
Step 5 - Buy 2 pre-paid envelopes and send the documents by mail
Envelopes
You must buy 2 pre-paid envelopes from a private carrier.
You should consult your consulate's website to find out the carrier and the type of envelope to buy.
You must
- send one of the envelopes to the consulate with your documents (the consulate will use it to send you your new passport)
- and use the other envelope to send the first envelope and your documents to the consulate.
Collect and print your documents
- Your original photo ID on photo paper
- Copy of the documents presented in the email reply to your pre-request
Send items to consulate
You must send the mail to the mailing address indicated in the reply to your pre-request.
Step 6 - Be invited to choose the appointment by videoconference with a consular officer
Once the consulate has received and verified your mail, you will be contacted by email to schedule an appointment. The email will invite you to log in to your personal area Service-Public.fr. You will have access to a link where you can choose the day and time slot for the appointment.
The meeting will be held by videoconference.
Step 7 - Join the videoconference with the Consular Officer
During the interview, the consular officer checks your file with you.
You will need to show your passport to the agent.
The duration of the maintenance is estimated to be approximately 20 minutes.
Step 8 - Receive the receipt from the consulate
Following the meeting by videoconference, the consulate will send you a receipt in your personal area Service-Public.fr. You are notified by email and must download the document entitled Receipt of your passport application in your personal area Service-Public.fr.

The deadline for receipt depends on the location and period of your request.
If the consulate accepts the passport application, your passport will be manufactured and sent to you.
While waiting for the receipt of the passport, you can follow its manufacture and its dispatch. You must go to the website of theANTS: titleContent and enter and validate the application number on the receipt:

Step 9 - Receive passport
You will receive your new passport in a secure envelope (in the envelope you purchased and sent with your documents). The passport is handed to you in person.
Step 10 - Activate your new passport
Confirm receipt of the passport on the internet
In a maximum of 40 days once you have received your passport, you must log in to the ANTS website:

You must enter the security number which is indicated on the receipt that you have downloaded your personal space Service-Public.fr.
Send the old passport by post within 40 days (unless you keep it, because it contains a visa still valid)
You need to buy a prepaid envelope (same as those used when sending your documents to the consulate).
In a maximum of 40 days after receiving your new passport, you must place your old passport in the envelope and send it to your consulate.
Warning
If the consulate has not received your old passport within this period, your new passport will be deactivated. You won't be able to use it anymore.

- If you don't have an ID card or it's older, check if the civil status of your place of birth is dematerialized. If not, you must provide a birth certificate of less than 3 months.
- Proof of French nationality if you are in a particular situation (e.g. foreign birth of parents born abroad)

You can request that the passport be sent to you by mail. But you have to be registered in the French foreigner register of the same country, have an email address and be able to transmit files via the Internet.
If you request the mail, you must provide at the time of filing, in addition to the necessary supporting documents, a postage-paid envelope purchased from the authorized service provider in the country. Inquiries should be made with the consulate to determine the authorized service provider, the size of the envelope to be provided and the postage required.
If you do not indicate anything at the time of filing, you will have to withdraw the passport instead of filing the file.
Step 3 - Prepare for passport payment
The passport costs €96.
You can pay in cash. Some consulates also accept payment by credit card, check or wire transfer. Consult the consulate's website to find out how to pay.
Step 4 - Go to the consulate or embassy
You must go to the consulate or embassy with the necessary documents.
Step 5 - Monitor the progress of passport manufacturing
The passport is not made on site. It cannot therefore be issued immediately.
Manufacturing lead times depend on the location and time period of the application.
If you provided a mobile phone number on the application form, you will receive a text message when the passport is available.

If, at the time of filing, you requested to receive the passport by mail
At the time of filing, if you have requested to receive the passport by mail, you will receive a notification email with a secret code.
As soon as you receive your passport, you must acknowledge its receipt using this online service:

The old passport must be returned to the consulate by secure mail of the same type as the one used for sending the new passport.
If it included a visa, it may be kept for the period of validity of that visa.
The passport is valid 10 years.
Other case
You must remove it personally at the place of filing and sign it on the spot.
It should be removed within 3 months after it has been made available. After this period, the passport is destroyed.
The old passport must be returned. If it included a visa, it may be kept for the period of validity of that visa.
The passport is valid 10 years.
