Want to work part-time? Depending on the reason for which you wish to work part-time, you are granted permission by right (i.e. it cannot be refused by your employer administration) or subject to service requirements. We detail these award conditions and the effects of part-time work on your career according to your public service of origin (State - FPE, territorial - FPT, hospital - FPH)
What applies to you ?
You may be given permission to work part-time for any of the following reasons or events:
- On the occasion of each birth, until 3e birthday of your child or on the occasion of each adoption, for a period of up to 3 years after the adopted child arrives at your home
- To care for your husband, your partner of Civil partnerships: titleContent, one dependent child or a ascendantwith a disability requiring the presence of a third person or a victim of an accident or serious illness
- After consulting the occupational doctor, if you have a disability benefiting from the obligation to use
- For personal convenience
- To create or resume a company
- For therapeutic reasons.
We will detail the conditions applicable to these different part-time cases.
EPF
If you are probationary official, you may be authorized to work part-time under the same conditions as a full-time official unless your probationary period involves vocational education or is to be completed at a training establishment.
The authorization to work part time is granted to you granted by right on the occasion of each birth, until 3e birthday of your child or on the occasion of each adoption, for a period of up to 3 years from the arrival of the adopted child at your home.
How long can part-time work be?
You can ask to work at 50%, 60%, 70% or 80% full-time.
How is part-time work organized?
Part-time work may be organized under the following conditions:
- Either in a daily setting: working hours are reduced every day
- Or in a weekly setting: the number of days worked per week is reduced
- Either within the framework of work cycle : the number of hours worked per cycle is reduced over a day or over several days
- Either in an annual framework: the work is organized over the calendar year or, if you are a teacher or equivalent, over the school year. The annualized part-time work permit shall indicate the alternation of periods worked and periods not worked and the distribution of working hours within the periods worked.
For what length of time is part-time granted?
Part-time shall be granted for one period from 6 months to 1 year, renewable for the same period, by tacit renewal up to 3 years.
The annualized part-time is granted for a one-year period, renewable twice by tacit renewal.
How do I apply for part-time work?
You can apply for part-time work at any time during the 3-year period following the birth or adoption of your child.
You must submit your request in writing, specifying the date on which you wish to work part-time and for what period.
There is no text setting the deadline for the submission of the application before the desired start date of the part-time period, nor the list of documents to be provided.
The application generally has to be made 2 months in advance. Inquire with your human resources department. Your employer administration may have prepared an application form and/or a list of supporting documents.
Warning
If your functions include exercising responsibilities that cannot be shared and which are consequently incompatible with part-time work, entitlement to part-time work shall be subject to assigning to other functions in accordance with the status of your home body, after the HEADING: titleContent in the event of a dispute.
Can you ask to change your part-time during the period?

General case
You can ask for the changing your part-time working conditions or returning to full-time work before the end of the current period.
You have to make your request at least 2 months before the desired date.
However, in the event of serious grounds, in particular in the event of a substantial reduction in your household income or a change in your family situation, full-time reintegration may take place without delay.

How is the part-time official paid?
You get a fraction of your index treatment and your bonuses and allowances.
You also get a fraction of your residence allowance, of your family treatment supplement - SFT and your new index enhancement - NBI, if you receive these compensation elements.

However, the amount of your part-time Family Salary Supplement (FTS) may not be less than the minimum amount paid to a full-time employee with the same number of dependent children as you:
If you are an annualized part-time employee, your gross monthly earnings are equal to 12e your gross annual remuneration, regardless of the distribution of periods worked and periods not worked.
During your period of part-time work, you continue to benefit from the partial coverage of your home transport - work under the same conditions as a full-time official.
You can perform overtime when you're part-time.
However, the monthly number of overtime hours you can work is limited to 25 hours multiplied by your working time, such as 20 hours if you work 80% (25 hours x 80%).
You do not benefit from the surcharges hourly allowances for additional work (IHTS) in case of overtime at night, on Sundays or on public holidays.

If you are placed in sick leave, of long illness or long life at half-treatment during a period when you are part-time, your half-treatment is calculated on the basis of your part-time remuneration.
For example, if you are placed on sick leave with half-treatment for a period of part-time at 80%, your half-salary is half the 6/7e of your full-time remuneration.
At the end of the part-time period, if you are still on sick leave, your half-salary is automatically calculated on the basis of your full-time remuneration.
What are the effects of part-time work on the official's administrative situation?
Part-time working periods shall be treated as periods of full-time work for advancement in step and grade , the internal promotion and training rights.
If you are doing your internship in whole or part-time, the duration of your internship is increased in such a way as to be of a duration equivalent to that of a full-time official.
For example, if you complete your entire internship at 80%, your internship is extended by 73 days (365 days x 20%).
You are entitled to same leave that a full-time employee:
- Annual leave equal to 5 times your weekly service obligations (e.g. 20 days if you work part-time at 80% 4 days per week
- Leave of absence disease, long-term illness, long-term, leave for temporary invalidity attributable to service
- Leave of absence motherhood or of adoption, of paternity and care of the child
- Vocational training leave
- Leave for validation of experience
- Skills Check Leave

Permission to work part-time is suspended during maternity, adoption or paternity leave. It shall also be suspended during training in which vocational education which is incompatible with part-time work is provided. As a result, you are reinstated full-time for the duration of your leave or training.
Part-time periods for raising a child born or adopted from 1er january 2004 are counted as periods of full-time work when calculating your number of pension insurance quarters and for the calculation of your retirement pension.
Part-time periods for raising a child born or adopted before 1er january 2004 are counted for their effective duration to calculate your number of pension insurance quarters.
But every child born or adopted before 1er january 2004 may entitle you to 4 additional quarters which are taken into account in the calculation of your number of quarters and in the calculation of your retirement pension. These additional quarters are called improvement.
In order to benefit from this one-year bonus, you must have reduced your professional activity according to one of the following conditions:
- 50% part-time for a continuous period of at least 4 months
- Part-time at 60% for a continuous period of at least 5 months
- 70% part-time for a continuous period of at least 7 months
How is the official readmitted full-time?
At the end of a period of part-time work, you are automatically re-admitted full-time to your job or, if this is not possible, to another job in accordance with your status.

How long can part-time work be?
You can ask to work at 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% or 90% full-time.
If you are an accountant, you can only benefit from a 80% or a 90%.
If you are under a service obligation plan, part-time work quotas can be adjusted to include either an entire number of hours or an entire number of half-days.
For example, for a teacher under a duty-bound regime of 18 hours per week, part-time at 80% (18x 80% =14 hours 24 minutes) is arranged so as to obtain an integer number of hours per week.
